OpenAI partners with CodeAI in a year-long initiative aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to use artificial intelligence safely and thoughtfully. Central to the initiative is ChatGPT for Teens, a tailored version of ChatGPT that OpenAI says includes built-in protections, tools to encourage healthy usage, and additional parental controls.
collaboration responds to what both organizations describe as a widening gap between students’ use of AI and their classroom understanding of the technology. OpenAI cites surveys showing that while most students already use AI tools, only a minority of high school leaders report teaching the technical knowledge needed to understand those systems. A separate CodeAI survey found that 75% of high school students believe understanding AI will be more important for their futures than it is today.
To address these gaps, OpenAI and CodeAI outlined several programs and initiatives to run over the coming year. They will convene a joint advisory council of experts in child development, youth policy and learning science to advise on risks, responsible practices and educational needs. The Hour of AI will introduce millions of students to foundational AI concepts and emphasize thoughtful, responsible use of tools like ChatGPT for Teens.
The partnership will also run a Builders Challenge inviting high school students to create AI projects, receive mentorship from OpenAI staff, and present their work publicly alongside supporting teachers. In support of classroom instruction, OpenAI’s safety and responsible-use experts will be available to consult on CodeAI’s AI Foundations—an existing free, year-long high school course. Career Journeys will expand students’ exposure to AI careers by connecting them with OpenAI researchers, engineers and leaders.
OpenAI’s Head of Child Development, Dr. Allison Mishkin, framed the effort as focused on critical thinking and responsible use: “Our goal is not simply to help more students use AI, but to help them ask better questions, think critically about the answers they receive, and use these tools responsibly.” CodeAI CEO Karim Meghji stressed the need for students to understand how AI works and to be able to evaluate its outputs: “Every student should know how AI actually works and be able to question the technology, catch its mistakes, and know when to stop trusting it.”
OpenAI and CodeAI positioned the partnership as one element in a broader, collective effort that includes parents, educators, researchers, policymakers and civil-society organizations. By combining curriculum, mentorship and a tailored ChatGPT for Teens experience, the organizations aim to make AI education more accessible and to ensure students develop both technical familiarity and critical judgment.

The initiative also emphasizes that AI literacy involves more than learning how to operate a tool. Students are expected to question outputs, recognize mistakes and understand when automated answers should not be trusted. Support from educators, child-development specialists, safety experts and other advisers is intended to keep the program focused on responsible use as well as technical knowledge. By combining curriculum, classroom resources and real-world guidance, the partners hope to help schools respond to students’ rapidly growing use of artificial intelligence while encouraging thoughtful judgment, safer habits and a clearer understanding of the opportunities and limitations of AI.
