Airbnb has broadened internal access to GPT-6 Astra access and other OpenAI frontier models for its engineering and product teams, aiming to speed software development, system design and product iteration by giving developers direct use of advanced models through both OpenAI APIs and Amazon Bedrock.
The expanded arrangement builds on a multi-year collaboration between Airbnb and OpenAI. Airbnb previously used Codex and models such as GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna to power an internal AI assistant for writing software and to create remote AI agents. Under the new agreement, more engineering and product teams will be able to call frontier models through the official OpenAI APIs and via Amazon’s Bedrock service, providing multiple integration pathways depending on team needs and cloud preferences.
Airbnb says early work with GPT-6 Astra has delivered notable improvements beyond basic code generation. According to internal reports, Astra has helped engineers locate hard-to-find bugs more quickly, prototype and shape system architectures, and brainstorm engineering approaches. In one internal test focused on strategic documents and non-coding work, an Airbnb user reported achieving the desired output in three to four passes with Astra, compared with more than 20 rounds when using other models.
Those efficiency gains are striking in the company’s metrics. Airbnb’s chief technology officer Ahmad Al-Dahle attributed a substantial increase in developer productivity to the integration of OpenAI models: “Our development teams are shipping roughly 80% more features than a year ago. OpenAI’s frontier models, including GPT‑6 Astra, are a key element of our developer tooling that helps us keep that momentum going and build better products faster,” he said.
Airbnb is not limiting frontier-model usage to internal developer tooling. The company applies OpenAI models across multiple areas of its marketplace, including search, fraud detection, guest and host support, and insurance-claims processing. Airbnb says these models help the business better understand guest intent, identify potentially fraudulent content or claims, assist guests whose travel plans change, and expedite insurance payouts for hosts.
As Airbnb integrates a broader set of trip-related services into its app — from homes and experiences to airport pickups and car rentals — the company views wider access to frontier models as a way to help product teams iterate faster and explore new features. By making models directly available to product and engineering teams through APIs and Bedrock, Airbnb expects to shorten the cycle from experimentation to production deployment.
OpenAI framed the expanded access as a partnership enabler. Dali Rajic, chief revenue officer at OpenAI, said that expanding access is intended to help Airbnb move ideas to production more quickly as it applies OpenAI capabilities across experiences for guests and hosts. The dual-channel approach — offering models via OpenAI’s APIs and Amazon Bedrock — reflects how major vendors are combining API access and cloud integrations to make frontier AI more directly available to enterprise teams.
The agreement and reported productivity gains at Airbnb reflect broader trends in enterprise uptake of leading generative models. Companies are increasingly using high-capability models not only for customer-facing features but as embedded tools within engineering workflows to reduce iteration time, uncover technical issues earlier, and prototype complex systems faster. Airbnb’s results, as described internally, illustrate one way organizations are measuring the impact of deeper model access on software development throughput and product experimentation.
While Airbnb’s public details focus on improved developer productivity and broader marketplace applications, the company’s staged approach — expanding access internally while continuing product-level integrations — suggests an emphasis on careful rollout and measurement. Teams will likely continue to evaluate how frontier models perform across use cases and how best to incorporate them into production systems while monitoring for robustness and alignment with company policies.
Airbnb’s move to widen access to GPT-6 Astra access and OpenAI frontier models underscores the growing role of powerful generative models inside major technology companies. For Airbnb, the combination of direct API access and cloud-based integration via Bedrock is intended to accelerate engineering velocity and enable more rapid product innovation across the travel marketplace.
